Darfur Peace & Development Organization

During the launch phase of Train for Humanity, we are training to raise funds for the Darfur Peace and Development Organization.

Darfur Peace & Development Organization (DPDO) was founded in 2002 by a group of Darfurians in the United States. DPDO is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to a peaceful Darfur that is justly governed and developed in a sustainable manner. The mission of DPDO is to provide humanitarian relief to victims of the genocide in Darfur, to facilitate just governance, and to enable Darfurians to effectively rebuild and develop their homeland. DPDO implements its programs with the following core values:

  • Inclusiveness, diversity, and human dignity
  • Exchange of ideas and strategies in a mutually respectful context
  • Continuous personal, social, and cultural growth
  • Concern for the rule of law and unrestricted access to justice
  • Development and distribution of knowledge relevant to Sudanese and those who assist them, and,
  • Outreach and advocacy on issues of concern to Sudanese.

How did we choose to support DPDO for our first Train for Humanity project?

A little over a year ago, after reading the book, “Darfur Diaries: Stories of Survival” I decided to contact one of the authors, Aiasha Bain. In the correspondence I asked Aisha if she knew of any organizations in Darfur working with orphans who have been affected by the genocide and that could use some assistance. Her response is below:

Hi Mark, Thanks for your email and your efforts to help Darfur. I’m afraid I don’t know of any orphanages per se, as we know them here as things are such a mess, everyone who can be in a camp is in one or is otherwise defending for themselves in their villages.

However, I do know of plenty of work being done to help children in desperate need. Our film and book project has set up an education project (requested by the Darfurians themselves) building and running schools in areas where there are no camps and little to no humanitarian access. We are working directly with Darfur Peace and Development, a Darfurian run organization which has several project helping children. They may be working with such children directly or can point you in the right direction.

We are pleased to be working with DPDO for our first project and truly hope we can reach our goal of raising $50,000 for them.
